Rosetta Stone Rosetta Stone Language Learning Software
The method behind the Pimsleur approach is the tried and true method of repetition. What makes this language method better than most, however, is the way that they integrate the repetition into a format that makes you feel like you are always progressing. Unlike most of the other systems out there that use repetition, and make you feel like you are going around in circles, the Pimsleur Approach utilizes carefully structured lessons that change the context in which the language elements are presented. That way, even though the basics of the language are being drummed into you, it never feels monotonous or boring... (read more)

Overall Comments Your best bet to REALLY learn a language. Uses written and spoken word as well as images. Gave our testers the fastest language proficiency. Just like being in a language class but in the comfort of your own home. No ability to improve pronunciation as voice recognition is not offered. Great voice recognition software really helps with pronunciation. Polished user interface and presentation. Lets you choose your preferred learning method: free-flowing or structured.  A bit old school: simply presents information in straight-forward manner. Uses audio repetition in a manner that makes you feel like you're always progressing. Manages to avoid monotony by giving you enough time to remember and apply before they give you the answer. Only audio CDs - doesn't take advantage of new technologies offered by others. A truly high-tech offering which allow you to use your PDA or iPod to keep learning while you're on the run or waiting in line. Great use of tests to ensure proficiency. Good speech recognition software aids with pronunciation. Mostly covers basics - best for users who are new to a language and not people looking to polish existing skills. Very strong at expanding vocabulary. It's really best for people wanting to improve already existing language skills and not recommended for beginners. Doesn't aid in developing grammar skills.

Overall Comments They offer fun games that make learning fun. A bit clunky in the way it presents information so it takes some getting used to. Gives a great overview of many languages but doesn't provide tools that give you proficiency. Gives only basic words and phrases so it should only be used as a reference for people who travel extensively as a "cram course" but at $19.95 we can't complain.
